A building with a long history, ready to welcome visitors and make them feel part of the city
When you are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful buildings of the city, you can’t help but think about welcoming guests into your home. This is how La Meridiana d’Alba was born. We moved to Via Coppa in 2022 after living abroad for many years. Our family has always lived in the city center of Alba, so we decided that this was the best place to start a new chapter of our life, with the will and hope of carrying forward the project started by our grandfather, Giuseppe, who purchased this building in the early 1990s and gave it a new life.
THE HISTORY OF LA MERIDIANA D’ALBA
The building where the rooms of La Meridiana D’Alba are located seems to have a very ancient past and to have hosted illustrious figures before us. In fact, in 1215, Giacomo Del Carretto was most likely born at the current address of Via Coppa 3/B.
Three hundred years later, the owners of the house still appear to be the Del Carretto family. Observing the municipal map from that time, the current parking area was probably once designated for horses and the exchange of goods.
In the 1800s, our house was listed in the Napoleonic land registry under number 136.
In 1994, Grandpa Giuseppe saw great potential in a somewhat run-down building. He decided to purchase it, renovate it, and reach an agreement with the municipality to turn it into the offices of the Regional Administration. Later, the offices were converted into a residence, and three additional rooms were created.
In 2023, La Meridiana D’Alba was born. But why “La Meridiana”? To remember a funny episode from the restoration process. While looking at the building, Grandpa Giuseppe noticed that one wall was rather bare. At that point, he asked the artist Nannerini to create a sundial on the highest side of the building. Today, the sundial is still there, and just like when it was first created, it never tells the correct time.
