Exploring the Langhe by e-bike

The Langhe, with their rolling vineyards, medieval villages and hilltop castles, are the perfect playground for those who love exploring by e-bike. Electric pedal assistance makes it possible to tackle climbs that would be challenging on a traditional bike, allowing for rewarding rides even for those who are not highly trained.

🚴‍♂️ Three recommended itineraries starting from Alba

1) Barbaresco & San Rocco (easy ride – 14 km)

An ideal route for a half-day outing or a relaxed ride, perfect for families or first-time cyclists. It starts from the main square in the centre of Alba and leads towards the panoramic hills of Barbaresco, returning on a loop.

Why go: beautiful views over the Barbaresco vineyards, authentic rural landscapes, and opportunities to stop in small villages.

Useful link: you can find the full route (with map and GPX track) on the BikeSquare app by searching “Barbaresco Langhe from Alba – Family E-bike Tour”.

2) Alta Langa (panoramic loop – approx. 75 km)

A more demanding but incredibly scenic loop: from Alba you climb towards Diano d’Alba, then cross the hills of the Alta Langa as far as Mombarcaro, before returning via Cravanzana and Benevello.

Highlights:

  • Wide views over valleys and vineyards
  • Stone villages with highly photogenic scenery
  • Sections on quiet secondary roads with very little traffic

Tip: start with a good battery charge (30–40 km of real autonomy) and plan a traditional lunch stop halfway through the ride.

3) “Barolo Rosso” loop and surroundings (approx. 50–55 km)

Among the official routes designed specifically for e-bikes is the “Barolo Rosso” loop. Starting from Alba, it climbs towards Roddi and crosses vineyards overlooking Castiglione Falletto and Barolo, passing small castles, country chapels and UNESCO-listed landscapes.

Why you’ll love it:

  • Perfect for a half-day ride
  • Scenic stops among the vineyards
  • Possibility of wine tastings with hilltop views

Other interesting e-bike routes are available here.

Must-see views by e-bike

  • Rocche dei Sette Fratelli – deep valley views and distinctive rock formations
  • Terraced Barbaresco vineyards at sunrise or sunset, ideal for photography
  • Roddi Castle – a panoramic viewpoint over the Talloria Valley
  • White gravel roads between La Morra and Barolo (not always paved, but suitable for gravel bikes or sturdy e-bikes)

Practical tips for e-bikers

Battery range and charging

  • Start with a fully charged battery and use Eco mode on longer climbs to save energy.
  • Apart from the free charging available at our accommodation, check local charging points on the map: wineries and agriturismi often offer charging on request.

Navigation

  • Install apps such as Komoot or BikeSquare: in addition to GPX tracks, they show road surface type (asphalt, dirt, gravel) and elevation profiles.

Safety and wine tastings

  • If you plan food and wine stops, let wineries know you’ll arrive by e-bike: many offer safe places to park or lock your bike.
  • Avoid main roads whenever possible: the hills are full of secondary roads with almost no traffic, safer and far more scenic.
